Download a backup of everything

One button, one zip, all your entries as plain text and all your photos as real files.

Settings → Import & backup → Download backup.

You get dayspring-backup-YYYY-MM-DD.zip, containing:

  • every entry, with its dates, title, tags and word count
  • the full text of each entry as Markdown
  • every photo, as an actual image file

Nothing is left behind on a server for you to come back for.

It’s readable without us

Markdown is plain text. Open it in any text editor, any other journal, any notes app, in twenty years, on a computer that hasn’t been invented yet.

That’s the point of the format. Your journal shouldn’t need our company to still exist.

Restoring it

Drop the same zip into the import panel and everything comes back. Entries are matched by their original ID, so restoring twice doesn’t give you two copies of your life. See importing.

Exporting one entry, or a few

You don’t need the whole thing every time:

  • One entry — its menu offers Copy text, Copy Markdown, Export Markdown, and Print.
  • Several at once — select them and export them together as a zip.

You can always take it

The backup button is available even when a subscription has lapsed, right on the screen asking you to subscribe.

We think holding someone’s journal hostage over a billing problem would be indefensible, so we made sure we can’t.

Worth doing

Before deleting your account, obviously. But also just occasionally. We keep backups, and it’s still good practice to hold your own copy of something that matters this much.
