Two places

Every entry is written to your device first — which is why Dayspring works on a plane and never makes you wait for a spinner before you can type.

It’s then synced and stored with us so it can reach your other devices and so you don’t lose your journal with a lost laptop.

Who can read it

Your entries are yours. We don’t sell them, we don’t share them, we don’t train anything on them, and we don’t read them for interest.

How it’s protected — the honest version

Your writing is encrypted on its way to us and while we store it.

It is not locked so that only you can open it. We hold the keys, so in principle we could read your entries. We don’t, and access is restricted — but you should decide based on what’s true rather than what sounds reassuring.

This is a real trade-off, not an oversight. Locking it that way would rule out everything Dayspring does when you’re not looking: no Lamp, no Altar, no Ascent, no asking a question of your own journal. Those need Dayspring to be able to read your writing.

We think that trade is worth it for what you get, and we think you’re entitled to know you’re making it. If it isn’t the right trade for you, that’s a completely reasonable conclusion.

Sharing a device

If two people use Dayspring on the same computer, signing in as one clears the other’s cached writing first. One person’s journal never appears under another person’s account.

Anonymous usage

There’s a Share anonymous usage switch in Settings → About, on by default. It counts which features get used — that the Lamp was opened, that an import ran. It never includes anything you wrote. Turn it off and nothing else changes.

Leaving

You can download everything at any time, in plain Markdown with your photos as real files. Not a proprietary format, not an export queue, not an emailed link that expires.
