Focus mode

Press ⌘⏎. The navigation, the sidebar, and everything else that isn’t your writing fades out.

Press Esc to come back.

Two settings inside it

While you’re in focus mode, two small controls float nearby.

Typewriter scrolling keeps the line you’re writing vertically centred, instead of letting it sink to the bottom of the screen. Your eyes stay in one place. On by default.

Dimming fades the paragraphs you aren’t currently in, so the one you’re writing is the one you can read clearly. Also on by default.

Both are toggles — try them off if they’re not for you. They’re also in Settings → Writing if you’d rather set them once.

The rest of the reading experience

Font, size, line height and column width all live in Settings → Writing. The column width one is worth a look: narrowing it makes a page read much more like a book and much less like a document.
